The charms of
Zlatibor
Zlatibor is one of our most attractive tourist destinations, especially for the lovers of mountainous surroundings.
It is located in the municipality of Cajetina, and is the right place to escape from the city and return to yourself and to nature.
It has benefits that most people don’t know about, which is why we have highlighted all the best corners of this area, that are ideal for a mountain adventure or for creating the best memories, for those who want to complete their virtual albums with unreal nature.
The first synonym for the natural beauties of Zlatibor, in addition to its wooded slopes, are its lakes.
The lake on Obudojevica, better known as Lake Zlatibor, is a real paradise for tourists. In the summer it is an ideal place to relax near the water, with the well-known pedal boat ride, while in winter it turns into a skating rink. Around it is a beautiful promenade filled with cafes and restaurants. The King’s Fountain was built next to the lake, as a reminder of the arrival of King Aleksandar Obrenović in 1893. It is one of the most famous landmarks of this mountain, and the most common stop for a short rest.
Ribnica Lake is also well-known for its special looks. It is an artificial lake, located 8km from Zlatibor. It is used for fishing, since it is rich in different types of fish, such as: trout, catfish and carp; but also for supplying water to the surrounding settlements of Cajetina and Kraljevo, so swimming in it is strictly forbidden. It is often part of tourist visits that end with a visit to the skicenter “Tornik”. The lake is 4 km away from the top of Tornik, so you can easily conquer the peak and enjoy the view. For lovers of active holidays, there are also bike paths near the lake.
The very special jewel of Zlatibor is the famous Gostilje waterfall, which is one of the ten highest in Serbia with its 20m height. It has a parking lot near the waterfall, and accessible path that leads to it so you can easily drive to it.
Near the waterfall there is a fish restaurant for anyone who prefer such specialties, with a special recommendation for grilled trout. The charm of Gostilje waterfall is that it is almost as beautiful in the winter as it is in the summer. When the waterfall freezes, the scene is almost unreal and becomes an even more attractive location to visit.
If you are someone who prefer untouched landscapes, which are not the first ones to stand out on our tour map, then the right place for you is the tourist resort Vodice. Permeated by the river Crni Rzav, situated only 10km from the center of Zlatibor it is ideal for walking and relaxation. A little further from this settlement, there is the sixth largest stone bridge in Serbia, located in the village of Dobroselica. Prerast in Dobroselica is an unavoidable sight that you should see, and it is completely free.
In the spirit of excursions, the must see item on your tour list should be the Uvac canyon. The famous nature reserve is located 50 km from the center of Zlatibor. Incredible meanders make an imposing sight. At the same time, this is a habitat for numerous species of birds, among which is a rare species of vulture eagle – griffon vulture, which can only be seen here. On the territory of the reserve there is the largest cave system in Serbia, 6,185 m long. It consists of Ušačka, Ledena, Baždarska and Tubić caves, as well as the Bezdan pit.
Following the caves, we reach the Stopić cave, which is a monument of the first category and one of the largest caves in Serbia. The Trnavski stream flows through it; It is characterized by clear and cold water. The entrance is 18m high, and the length of the cave is 2km. It consists of different units: light and dark halls, canals with tubs and halls with tubs, as well as a river canal. Since it is a tourist attraction, this cave is beautifully decorated. It has a paved path and is illuminated, so you can visit every corner of the cave. The so-called Bigrene tubs are the biggest attraction in these halls. They are cavities filled with water similar to real bathtubs, which are additionally filled in periods when it rains, creating a scene to remember by forming a waterfall almost 9.5 m high. Entrance to this cave is charged and amounts to 250 dinars for adults.
If you would like to feel the spirit of rural life of the Middle Ages, you should not miss one of Zlatibor’s biggest treasures, the only open-air museum in our country – “Old Village” Sirogojno. The museum consists of 48 objects transferred from different parts of Zlatibor. Wooden houses faithfully evoke the life of the Middle Ages, but there are also accommodation facilities, so you can take a longer break and stay through the night. The “Knitting Museum”, opened in 2008, is dedicated to the women of this area and their handicrafts, which have become a serious business in the previous years, and whose products are exhibited there. You can buy most ofthem, and naturally the most requested are those made of wool- sweaters, hats, scarves, which are wildly recognizable by its quality and warmth. Within the village is the oldest church in the Zlatibor region, dedicated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul, and which marked over 250 years of its existence.
One of the places that is among the main tourist attractions is Drvengrad in Mokra Gora, or as it is also called – Mećavnik. This cultural-tourist complex of ethno style is the idea of the movie director Emir Kusturica, who used it for the filming of “Life is a Miracle.” It is located between Zlatibor and Tara and is visited by over 100,000 people every year. At the end of June, the festival “Native Days” is held in Drvengrad, and in January, the film festival “Kustendorf”, which gathers celebrities from all around the world. The city has the status of a hotel-city and is rated with four stars. The streets of this city are named after important people from both Serbia and the rest of the world. The main street is named after Ivo Andrić, while the others are named after Novak Đoković, Nikola Tesla, but also Diego Maradona, Ernest Che Guevara, and many others.
One of the most interesting buildings in this location is the wooden church dedicated to Saint Sava, which has a wooden bell tower.
If you have children and you are not sure if the above-mentioned locations would be interesting to them, there is no doubt that you will hit the bull’s eye if you take them to the newest attraction on Zlatibor – Dino Park. This park is ideal for an active vacation with children, because on 3 hectares there are various contents such as: artificial rocks, 6D cinemas, adventure park, polygon for quads and much more. It is the right place for family bonding time and bringing out the child in you, no matter how old you are.
At the end of this written adventure, we hope that you will head to the real one, and make sure that our words were true and that Zlatibor is the ideal place for you.
Have a nice trip!
